Join our special guest artist for this three week class; choose either Tuesday or Wednesday. Students will learn the techniques to draw a favorite pet or any other animal, from a photo reference.
  • Week one: Spencer will demonstrate how to analyze reference photos and how to begin your contour drawing. He will discuss the importance of  setting your intention and composition for the portrait so you can begin.
  • Week two: A demonstration will show the importance of laying in a strong value structure with shadows and edges. Students will apply this instruction to his or her drawing.
  • Week three: Students will watch Spencer to learn how to refine the details to a finished portrait.
  • Week four: Continue your drawing instruction with Sansanee Boonyad!

Instructions for taking a good reference photo: Have a strong direct light source (like a desk lamp or spotlight) pointed immediately above and towards your pet while sitting still. If from a smartphone, tap the area on the screen where your pet portrait shows up before taking the photo and it should focus. You may need to take a few by repeating the process. Pick the photo that comes our clearest. You may need to stand some feet away, to avoid foreshortening distortion, and zoom to capture the image.

Don’t have a photo? We will have animal photos for you to choose from.
